Pilates is an extraordinary conditioning system that works the entire body. Joseph Pilates created this unique method of exercise more than 50 years ago, based on calisthenics, gymnastics, boxing, dance, and yoga, and influenced by his work with injured athletes and dancers. He focused on the body as a whole, developing a series of specific exercises to elongate and balance the muscles and turn the abdominal muscles, lower back and hips into the body’s “power-house”.

How Will I Benefit from Group Pilates Reformer Workouts at LAB5?

A Little Background on Joseph Pilates & Pilates

Born in Germany in 1880, he had a difficult youth, suffering from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. To combat the effects of these ailments, he studied and learned body building, diving, skiing, and gymnastics. In 1912, Joe went to England where he earned a living initially as a boxer, circus performer, and a self defense trainer of English detectives. When World War I broke out, Joe was interned with other Germans designated as ‘enemy aliens’ at a camp in Lancaster. He trained other internees in his physical fitness exercises, and is widely credited with the noted fact that none of his trainees died during the influenza epidemic that killed thousands in England that year.

joseph_pilatesReturning to Germany after the war, where he continued his fitness training programs, the German government requested that he apply his training in and for the German Army. At this point, in 1926, he decided to emigrate to the United States. He met his future wife Clara on the boat trip to America and, together, they established a studio in New York City to teach and share his knowledge and fitness programs. He attracted the attention of several major dancers and dance studios, including such well-known names as Martha Graham and George Ballanchine, who sent many of their own students to Pilates. He lived to the age of 87, a fitting tribute to the effectiveness of his training methods and fitness exercises. The rest continues to be history.

LAB5 Customized Pilates Reformers

The LAB5 Reformer is the ideal medium to isolate every aspect of your body. We will move from the front of the Reformer to the back while working each muscle group.
We offer diversified 50 minute group classes with a maximum of 10 members, conducted by dedicated qualified professional instructors, for beginners to the most experienced exercise fanatics and all workouts are coordinated with fun high-energy music geared to results. Private instruction is also available.

LAB5 Fitness has dedicated the front studio to our custom made Balanced Body state-of-the-art Pilates Reformer machines because they’re beautiful, effective, and unique. The custom frames are made of sustainably harvested maple; an artful alternative to traditional medal Reformers.

lThe Reformer spring system allows your body to work in counter resistance which makes each exercise more intense while minimizing unnecessary stress on your joints and spine. The Reformer offers hundreds of various hybrid Pilates exercises and can be adapted to all levels of fitness abilities. Whether you are looking in your workouts to increase your flexibility, strength, balance, sculpt, tone, range of motion or cardio we have something for all with our customized Reformers and LAB5 is about your long term fitness and health results.

CLASSES

Power Reformer

Our Signature Class! A total body fusion class charged for power. This session will incorporate hybrid principles of Pilates to work your intrinsic muscles, combined with circuit training techniques to fire your extrinsic muscles. We move at a brisk pace to achieve cardiovascular endurance and stamina. Be prepared to sweat. This high-energy class will work multiple muscles at a time as well as challenges your balance and flexibility.

LAB Alert! Dumbbells and our unique Jump board may be incorporated in our signature LAB5 Power Reformer class for a more hybrid and PlyoMetric Training (training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance).

Our specific and custom designed LAB5Reformer Machine will be utilized. **Prior Reformer experience is highly recommended. Space is limited to 10 LAB5 community members.

Purist Reformer

A classical and traditional approach to Pilates, the way it was intended on the Reformer. Focusing on the art of corrective alignment to rejuvenate or improve our spine and to strengthen your core, incorporate coordination with mind, body, and spirit. You will focus on posture, body mechanics, correct breathing, spinal flexibility, and physical education.

Our specific and custom designed LAB5Reformer Machine will be utilized. Space is limited to 10 LAB5 community members.

TLC Reformer

Tender – Loving – Care Reformer hybrid Pilates class.

This specialty class intends to increase or maintain flexibility, range of motion and reduce pain. This is an excellent transition after many types of rehabilitations, a long sabbatical or vacation and maybe even an opportunity to get back into the swing of things. This class is an excellent introduction to the LAB5 Reformer machine and a great compliment to your regular LAB5 routine.

The words maintenance and prevention are perfect descriptors for this class. For you will promote fluidity, ease in movement and learn methods for proper alignment and posture. Come experience a lifestyle education course and develop techniques that will be amazing for your mind and body awareness.
